Condo Names Participants for 2019 Gallery Share in São Paulo -ARTnews

Condo, the enterprising gallery-share program that hosts editions each year in London, New York, and elsewhere, has revealed the details for its 2019 edition in São Paulo. Organized by Jaqueline Martins, who runs an eponymous gallery in the city, Condo São Paulo will kick off this year with two preview days, on March 30 and 31.

The Brazilian city was previously home in 2018 to a mini version of Condo (a “Unit” edition) at just one location, Martins’s enterprise, which featured presentations by eight galleries. This year brings an expanded version of the affair, with nine São Paulo galleries hosting 11 spaces from out of town.

“After some conversations with Vanessa Carlos [the organizer of Condo London], we decided to create something different from the other Condos, so the first edition Condo São Paulo became Condo São Paulo Unit,” Martins said in an email. “It was a success, and other galleries in the city [have] joined the project. . . . I am very happy to organize the bigger second edition, because I still think that the business model that we have today is far from the ideal.”

Condo was founded in 2016 as an alternative to the art-fair model. It allows galleries in a given city to host their colleagues from other areas, with visiting enterprises paying small fees that, in comparison to those associated with showing at fairs, are minimal.
