French police have evacuated hundreds of migrants living in refugee camps under a bridge in Paris. On Tuesday morning, authorities cleared about 300 migrants from an illegal makeshift camp at the Porte de la Chapelle.
The cabinet director for the ‘Paris Region Prefect’ — Bruno Andre — said the refugees, who are mainly from Africa and Afghanistan, packed up their belongings and were sent to various migrant shelters on a “voluntary basis.”
“They are being sent to a shelter — they’ll get a medical check, and then we’ll be looking at their administrative situation and according to their rights, they will be sent to centers,” said Andre. “For the past few weeks, we have been regularly sending people to shelters all over the Paris region — these people are then given a place to stay, and today, 299 people were willing to be dealt with.”
This comes as France has struggled for years to clear migrant camps in Paris and other big cities.
