Iowa taxpayers are shelling out over $3,000 in legal fees for an illegal alien accused of murdering Mollie Tibbetts.

A judge ruled Wednesday for the state to cover the cost of a forensic expert to assist Cristhian Rivera.

This does not include money for testimony fees or travel expenses, which will require further grants.

His legal team argues the expert is necessary for Rivera to fully understand the case against him, because of the language barrier he faces.

Rivera has pleaded not guilty to first degree murder despite having led authorities to the body. His case will go to trial in September.
