Thomas Dane Gallery, which has spaces in London and Naples, Italy, has partnered with New York art dealer Simon Preston, who will work as a consultant for the gallery in North America. Both Thomas Dane Gallery and Preston will maintain separate programs.

Preston was among Thomas Dane Gallery’s first employees; he was with the enterprise from 2001 to 2003 before establishing his own gallery on New York’s Lower East Side in 2008 as part of the first wave of dealers to open in the area, which now teems with galleries. He closed his gallery’s space last year.

Preston, who’s shown artists like Amie Siegel, Victoria Fu, and Josh Tonsfeldt, will consult for Thomas Dane Gallery from an office and viewing space at 1 Rivington Street in New York (a few blocks from his business’s former home), which will be open by appointment starting this month.

At NADA Miami Beach, which took place in December, Preston spoke with Artnet News about his decision to close his storefront, saying, “I thought, ‘This is my way to take my woes and turn them into opportunities.’ “

Thomas Dane Gallery joins a bevy of London galleries that have recently—in one way or another—become involved in the New York market. White Cube opened an office on the Upper East Side last May, and Simon Lee opened a public New York outpost back in 2017. And, in 2016, Lisson Gallery opened its first of two New York locations. However, Thomas Dane Gallery said that it has no plans to open a physical space in New York.
